From Karkinari you have to drive back the road you came to Kalamos. There you have to turn right to the road which will lead you across the mountains to the high plateau of Langada. The road is made with crushed stones and sand and was in very bad condition, when I was there the last time. The road winds up to the mountains in steep serpentines. You better should have a cross country vehicle. If you have done the way up after all, you will have a wonderful view over the whole west of Ikaria.

On the top, the terrain passes into the high plateau of Langada slowly. The high plateau of Langada has very fertile ground, where are many olive trees grows. A small river flows right through, which supplies the needed water for the plants. Depending on the water level the meadows along the river change into a wet biotope. An eldorado for plant- and animal lovers. You can find frogs, lizards, snakes, spiders, birds and some rare plants.

At the end of the high plateau you will arrive at the new big reservoir. It is situated on the left side of the road and invites to a longer rest. Big slabs offers the table for that. After your visit at the new reservoir you have to decide which way you wanna take. You can go left to Christos Raches or you can go right to take the longer way via the old reservoir and Evagelistrias and Theoktistis monastery.

The old reservoir is a beautiful nature paradise, which let the hearts of discoverers beat higher. Flora and fauna present in unbelievable variety. It's worth it to stay a while, to rummage around and take the impressions in. You have to go to the dam to enjoy the view into the gorge behind. On the left you will see a big rock and when you climb on it, you will have a great view across the whole valley.

If you wanna take a look at all fotos I took at the old reservoir, you have to watch the slideshow 'At the old reservoir' (11 Fotos) .
