The first section of this tour will lead you to the Castro Kosikia via Gialiskari, Kampos and Evdilos. A cross country vehicle is not necessary, except you wanna take the whole tour to manganitis. Then it would be better to rent a jeep or an enduro bike. The description of Gialiskari I will leave out. Informations about Gialiskari you will get on the Gialiskaripage.

First stop on the tour is the village Kampos (also Kambos). In the antiquity the town Oinoi the old capital of Ikaria was found here. Some ruins of this old town are remain. The legend says that at Oinoi the first vine on earth was found. The vine which was found here is said so excellent, that Dionysos the god of the vine himself it prefers. Therefore the town was called Dionysias for a longer time. In the small museum at kampos you can see some important findings. Sometimes Vassili works as a museums guide and he is a master in telling mythological stories. Before he can turn the key to the small museum, you will know the whole sad story about the first test pilot of the world: How Ikarus took off the ground, came to near to the sun, as the wax started melting and he plunged down into the sea at the coast of Ikaria.

Next stop on the tour is Evdilos. I love it very much to have a short break at the Platia to have a little snack or a drink before I drive furher. More Information about Evdilos you will find on the Evdilospage.

Behind Evdilos leads the next section of the tour to the Castro Koskina. The first part leads over well asphalted roads through a wonderful green valley to the charming villages Dafni and Steli, which nestle against the mountain slopes. Together with the villages Akamatra, Petropouli and Kosikia they form the region of Messaria. Everywhere in this villages it thrives in magnificent colours. The people you meet are very friendly and say hello while you are driving through there villages. Behind Steli you have to turn left to a crushed stone road to the Castro Kosikia. Attention, you can miss the sign very easily. The ruin of the Castro Kosikia are remnants of a byzantinic fort of the 11th century. The fort was build on a hill in a very strategic position. From the fort you can watch across the whole region.
